Finding out we were having another little girl was like Christmas morning! Since the new baby and Maxine will only be about 19 months apart, we were hoping for her to have a sister. I always wanted two girls close in age then have a baby boy, or three girls. I know, I must be crazy. When we told people we were pregnant again, many said "Maybe you'll get your boy this time" or something along those lines. I know they meant well and it's a common response, but it bothered me. Like wanting a girl wasn't even a possibility, and it made me feel like they thought that I wished Max had been a boy. I know those people didn't mean anything by it which is why I didn't snap at them. I would just say "Actually, we want another girl."
Since our midwife doesn't do ultrasounds, we found a place in Nashville that only does them to tell gender and get pictures. They don't do measurements or any diagnostics. So I scheduled an appointment for November 6, Pat's 30th birthday. I thought it would be a great birthday present since he was the one that really, really, really needed to know. I could have waited. I was 17 weeks pregnant at the time. The office was small and we were the only ones there. The receptionist remembered me telling her that it was Pat's birthday because she wished him a happy one as soon as she saw us. She even gave us a discount! But then said, "Maybe it'll be a boy this time." Ugh.
Going into this ultrasound, I had expressed some concerns to Pat. I didn't feel this baby move hardly at all. Maxine was so active in my belly, but this baby just was not moving. He reassured me that everything was fine, but I couldn't help but worry. So, with my fingers crossed, we went back to the ultrasound room. There was a big screen on the wall, a couch, and big soft table for me. It was so relaxing and cozy. The tech began playing some soft music. He immediately noticed something...I had an anterior placenta, which means it was in the front between my belly and baby. No worries, it is fairly common. It just makes ultrasounds a little harder and it will cause me to not feel her movements as well. I let out a sigh of relief as I looked at the screen at my active, healthy baby girl. When it was over, he printed out a few pictures. Maxine grabbed one and gave it a kiss. My heart melted.
Afterwards, we went to lunch. Pat loooooves Chinese so we found a good little spot down the street. As he drove, I started making phone calls to spread the good news. We were all smiles and kept talking about how great it will be to have two little girls. I could tell Pat was having such a wonderful birthday. The food was great, and when we opened our fortune cookies....well, it was icing on the cake! Mine and Pat's were silly, but Maxine's said "A charming friendship is in the making." It was so perfect, we were speechless. Wow. I tucked the fortune away safely in my wallet to put in the baby book later. It was only I-40, but it felt like we were driving home on Cloud 9.
(I am only a month late writing this....oops.)
